Being More Active

Put physical activity high on your "to-do" List.

  • Three 10-minute blocks of moderate activity during the day can do you as much good as 30 minutes of activity all at once.
  • People how spend at least 30 minutes a day being active enough to breath a little harder are less likely to have.
    • Heart attacks
    • Weight problems
    • Cancer
    • High blood pressure
    • Diabetes
    • Brittle bones (Osteoporosis)

Being active is the answer

  • For people with most health conditions, being physically active usually does the body more good than harm.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and drink plenty of water when you are physically active.

You don't have to spend lots of money to be active

  • Walk in a shopping mall, around your neighborhood, or at the local high school track.
  • Walk when you can instead of driving  and save money on gas.
  • If you spend any money on physical activity, spend it on a comfortable pair of walking shoes that fit you well.
  • Talk to a foot doctor about finding the right shoes if you have problem with your feet.

Don't get "sore" about a few aches and pains.

  • The first few times you move in a new way you may feel a little sore, but after that you will feel better and better.
  • You're less likely to get sore if you start slowly and warm up.
  • Try swimming or water exercises.
  •  If you are overweight, losing a few pound can help with aches and pains.

Healthy Weight Tips

Summer is coming up and we all want to lose some extra pounds to look great. However, the most important thing is to lose them in a healthy way!!

Avoid Emotional eating

  • Don't let strong feelings turn into weight gain.
  • Figure out what your eating triggers are.
  • Pay attention to how much and what are you eating.

Don't skip meals.

  • Skipping meals does not help you to lose weight!
  • Your body needs a certain amount of calories every day.
  • If you skip a meal, you will probably snack or eat more later.
  • Try to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day.

Eat when you are hungry and stop eating when you are full.

  • Sit at a table to eat.
  • Slow down! Eating slow let you enjoy your food and gives your brain a chance to figure out when you are full.
  • Put your fork down between most bites to help you slow down.
  • Pay attention to portion size.

Plan to have healthy snacks.

  • Snacking is not always a bad thing. It just depends in what the snack is.
  • Prepare healthy snacks ahead of time  and keep them handy when you are on the go.
  • Healthy snacks include raw vegetable, fruit, a small handful of nuts or unbuttered popcorn.

Be active while sitting.

  • If you spend a lot of time sitting, either watching TV or working at a desk, get more active!
  • Aim for 2 1/2 hours of physical activity each week.

Dealing with Stress

We all have stress at one time or another, but stress can make it hard to eat well and be active. Living with a chronic disease can also add stress to your life. Here are some ways to deal with stress:

Know what stresses you out... Are any of these things worrying you?

  • Money issues
  • Your job (or not having a job)
  • Your health
  • Health care expenses
  • Your children or family
  • Problems in your marriage
  • A sick family member or friend

Know the signs of stress

  • Worrying
  • Forgetting things
  • Tiredness
  • Teeling "down"
  • Unable to get things done
  • Can't sleep
  • Nagging headaches
  • Bad temper
  • Avoiding your friends
  • Upset stomach

Choose healthy ways to deal with stress

  • When you are stress out, you may not feel like you have the time or energy to watch  what you eat or be physically active. the good news is that there are lots of healthy ways to deal with stress.
  • When you know what stresses you out  and how to react to stress, you can deal with it better.
  • Don't smoke, drink alcohol, or eat more than usual when you are stresses. you'll only feel worse.

Know the Symptoms!

The Make the Call. Don't Miss a Beat. campaign is a national public education campaign that aims to educate, engage, and empower women and their families to learn the seven most common symptoms of a heart attack and encourage them to call 9-1-1 as soon as those symptoms arise.
A woman suffers a heart attack every 90 seconds in the United States. Yet according to a 2009 American Heart Association survey only half of women indicated they would call 9-1-1 if they thought they were having a heart attack and few were aware of the most common heart attack symptoms.

1. Unusually heavy pressure on the chest, like there's a ton of weight on you

  • Most heart attacks involve chest pain or discomfort in the center or left side of the chest. It usually lasts for more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. It may even feel like heartburn or indigestion.

  • 2. Sharp upper body pain in the neck, back, and jaw

This symptom can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, shoulders, neck, jaw, or upper part of stomach (not below the belly button). Pain in the back, neck, or jaw is a more common heart attack symptom for women than it is for men.

  • 3. Severe shortness of breath

This symptom can come on suddenly. It may occur while you are at rest or with minimal physical activity. You may struggle to breathe or try taking deep breaths. Shortness of breath may start before or at the same time as chest pain or discomfort, and can even be your only symptom.

  • 4. Cold sweats, and you know it's not menopause

Unexplained or excessive sweating, or breaking out into a "cold sweat," can be a sign of heart attack.

  • 5. Unusual or unexplained fatigue (tiredness)

Sudden and unusual tiredness or lack of energy is one of the most common symptoms of heart attack in women, and one of the easiest to ignore. It can come on suddenly or be present for days. More than half of women having a heart attack experience muscle tiredness or weakness that is not related to exercise.

  • 6. Unfamiliar dizziness or light-headedness

Unlike in the movies, most heart attacks do not make you pass out right away. Instead, you may suddenly feel dizzy or light-headed.

  • 7. Unexplained nausea (feeling sick to the stomach) or vomiting

Women are twice as likely as men to experience nausea, vomiting, or indigestion during their heart attack. These feelings are often written off as having a less serious cause. Remember, nausea and vomiting may be signs that something is seriously wrong, especially if you have other symptoms.

If you or your loved ones experience any of this symptoms, call 911. For more information click here.
